Dr. Dwayne Buckingham

Dwayne L. Buckingham, Ph.D., LCSW, BCD is a highly -acclaimed international clinical psychotherapist, relationship expert, life skills consultant, speaker, author, and facilitator.  He is the founder of R.E.A.L. Horizons Consulting Service, LLC, which provides high-quality cognitive-behavioral seminars, leadership training and consulting.

Dwayne Buckingham, the second youngest of eight children, was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. Buckingham grew up in the inner city surrounded by crime and poverty, and was exposed to hardships most commonly faced by American-American males residing in the ghetto.
As a young child, Buckingham experienced academic and behavioral challenges—being suspended from school regularly and having to repeat second grade.  As he entered middle school, he was enrolled in special education classes. Confined to the rough streets of the ghetto, Buckingham began a journey down the self-destructive path traveled by many urban youth.  But opportunity changed Buckingham’s destiny.
In the seventh grade, Buckingham was able to leave the inner-city school district and enter into a desegregation program. Being exposed to a different culture and lifestyle—a predominately white environment—caused Buckingham to face new challenges.  Buckingham quickly adopted skills that enabled him to survive in his new environment.  Buckingham’s skills worked to his advantage as he was able to beat the statistics by graduating from Parkway West Sr. High School in 1992.  With family support and persistence, Buckingham entered Jackson State University in the fall of 1992 and graduated with honors in 1996.
In 1997, Buckingham was awarded an academic scholarship to Michigan State University where he received his Masters degree in Clinical Social Work. With a growing desire to serve his country and work with a diverse patient population, Buckingham joined the United States Air Force in 1998 as a First Lieutenant. He earned the rank of Captain 18 months later and received his license as a Clinical Social Worker from the Michigan Board of Social Workers in 2000. He also received a clinical social worker license from the Missouri Board of Social Workers and the Board Certified Diplomat in Clinical Social Work (BCD) from the American Board of Examiners.  Buckingham served his country for eight years and resigned his commission as a Captain in August 2006.
Currently, Buckingham provides individual, couples and group psychotherapy to military troops and their dependents assigned to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.  He is dedicated to helping individuals reach their full potential and has demonstrated his dedication through multiple seminars, film, and book projects, which include:
